Welcome!

Even with the economy not yet in full recovery, it's still a good time to consider home improvements. Especially green ones. According to Charles Schwab (oninvesting, Summer 2009), the weak economy means contractors are looking for work and more open to negotiation on prices. Costs of some construction materials are still down, and many retailers are still offering sales and reduced pricing on appliances, lighting, and other household goods. And, Schwab says, "if the renovation improves your home's energy efficiency, you'll start recouping your investment soon," through lower monthly energy bills. How much can you save? The government's Home Energy Saver website says about $600 - $1200 a year (hes.lbl.gov). Those energy-efficient upgrades can also net you credits at tax time (see sidebar).

Thinking of selling? Green renovation projects can also increase the value of your home. According to recent research by McGraw Hill, people looking for a green home were willing to pay over $18,000 more (realtytimes.com, "Green Home Buyers Pay, Save More").

Whatever your reasons, if you're thinking about a green remodel, we're here to help with with useful articles and other resources for ideas, materials and methods. We've even included a greenbuilding glossary to help you wade through the jargon you might encounter on your quest for greater greenness. We're a work in progress so we invite you to check back often.

Know anybody who's doing a green remodel? Are you? Whether you're a homeowner, designer or remodeler, we'd like to hear about it! We might even publish your .jpg images and a short narrative about your work in progress right here on the site. Drop us an e-mail at info@greenremodel.net
